Exploring Nationalism and History: BES Bosconians at KAPULWAN 2023

The annual UP Lipunang Pangkasaysayan (UP LIKAS) National Conference of History Students, held at the University of the Philippines-Diliman Campus in Quezon City on October 19-20, 2023, was a gathering of historical significance. This two-day event, aptly named "KAPULWAN: Pamana at Hamon ng Nasyonalismong Pilipino," brought together history enthusiasts, educators, and students from across the country.

Among the participants were the delegates from Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong. Comprising students from various grade levels in the Junior High School, this group included Ferd Angelo Calimbahin from Grade 7, Darlucio Rua and Danyael Rain R from Grade 8, John Aron Isaiah Q Calabia from Grade 9, and Reinald Angelo Q. Morada from Grade 10. They were under the guidance of Ms. Agnes T. Narag, Subject Area Head, and Mr. Francis Cay Samuel R. Sulleza, Araling Panlipunan Teacher.

The Bosconians participation in the conference allowed them to engage with a diverse array of topics related to Philippine history and nationalism. The conference explored themes such as the legacy of the Filipino Church, the influence of GOMBURZA and the Secularization Movement, propagandist and revolutionary literature, the role of women and youth in Philippine nationalism, and the contributions of indigenous people, Muslims, and the Filipino diaspora. Furthermore, the delegates delved into discussions on Filipino cuisine, science and disasters, popular culture, and the teaching of Philippine nationalism in basic education.

However, the conference offered more than just academic discussions and workshops. It provided a unique opportunity for the delegates to interact with esteemed figures in Philippine history and culture. Notably, they had the privilege of meeting Prof. Xiao Chua, a renowned public historian, and having their books signed by him. Additionally, they engaged in a poster signing session with Kidlat Tahimik, the National Artist for Film. These encounters undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the young minds of the Bosconians, enriching their understanding of the Philippines' rich heritage and its relevance to contemporary challenges.

In a broader context, the participation of the BES Bosconians exemplifies the importance of fostering a deeper appreciation of history and cultural heritage among young students. By actively engaging in events like the UP LIKAS conference, these students are not only enriching their own knowledge but also contributing to the broader narrative of Philippine history and nationalism. •
