DBAA LaMPs Boscolympics 2024 — One Goal: Don Bosco Manda Employees Fight for First
Sporting events started at Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati for the annual DBAA tournament penned as the Boscolympics of the Lay Mission Partners (LAMPs). The event was held on April 6, 2024, in multiple venues scattered across DBTI-Makati. With the multi-sport event including table tennis, chess, basketball, badminton, volleyball, darts, and futsal, the heat-filled rivalries in a sense of cooling down after a long day of work was a success.
Events started early, with the table tennis matches at the Table Tennis Gym. The team consisted of Ms. Carina Nazareno, Mr. Rey Tagum, Ms. Sophia Canayon, Mr. Arnold Capistrano, and Mr. Roderick Manzano. Matches were set in a round-robin format, meaning matches were won by earning three wins out of five games. Mr. Rey Tagum of Don Bosco Mandaluyong and Mr. Ivan Estrada of Don Bosco Makati took home the first round of the matches for their respective teams.
“Naninibago pa ‘ko sa play,” Mr. Tagum commented after returning to the sport he loved many years ago.
The second round went to pairs, Mr. Sta. Ana and Mr. Isaac of Don Bosco Makati, and Mr. Cuyugan and Mr. Siongco of Don Bosco Tarlac, setting the game at an equal stage for all. The following round went back for some more singles action, with Mr. Borreros of Don Bosco Makati winning in straight sets while Mr. Cuyugan of Tarlac went back to solo playing, winning the sets, and patiently waiting for the championship matches to follow. Finally, the championship match held up, with Don Bosco Makati winning the final match. Don Bosco Mandaluyong placed 2nd Runner-Up, showing our valiant efforts as a school without an official team still putting them on the scoreboard.
From the ping-pong action, we go ahead with our badminton shuttlers competing with rackets in hand. Our first match went to Ms. Monica Abiog and Mrs. Mary Alanis, where the pair took down the opponents in straight sets, showing their strength on the court. Another notable win captured by our delegates was by partners Mr. Guillen Rapadas and Mr. J.C. Oliquino, who hit nice rallies between the two teams, once again showing the strength of a Mandaleño.
Following a series of matches, another notable set was with doubles partners Mr. Guillen Rapadas and Mr. Ervin Aman, long-time players and fans of the sport, providing the audience with a show with quick hits and agile footwork. Their speed on the court held up the team’s standings in the tournament, eventually clinching 2nd Runner-Up for the delegation.
“Very good!” said Mr. Rapadas, a short but sweet statement summarizing their matches against the other teams.
Our team sports, such as basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball, and even futsal, provided some expertise and surprises. The basketball team did not place in the standings, yet they finished strong, showing exemplary shooting form and speed in the Magone Dome, truly showing fair play and a fighting spirit to fellow lay mission partners. The Savio Dome provided the venue for the futsal games, with a notable entrant from our institution, Fr. Ramil Maranan, SDB, graced the venue with his emotion and showed incredible footwork on the floor, showcasing a performance of a lifetime and earning 1st Runner-Up.
The men’s and women’s volleyball teams then replied to the flexibility we were yearning for. The MVP for Mandaluyong in the men’s side was Mr. Laurence Zaragoza, leaping high and setting the ball incredibly for other teammates to follow through, showing teamwork does make the dream work. The women’s team then showed their dexterity and coordination, hitting the ball to new heights, and eventually placed 2nd Runner-Up in an utterly competitive category.
Finally, the chess and darts teams showed surprising results for events that are underappreciated in the sporting world. Chess is classified as a mind sport, and the meet did train the minds of our fellow players, showing their mastery in play for the tournament. The darts team, which consisted of Mr. Melvin Maranan, Ms. Christine Guardiano, and Mr. Edgardo Salvador, highlighted the moment we were waiting for. The team led the pack, racking up more points than other delegations by a wide margin, eventually earning Don Bosco Mandaluyong an incredible win!
With a win, one first runner-up, and three second runner-up titles, the event provided an amazing end to our school's run in the Boscolympics. With spirit and body in mind, the delegation successfully highlighted their recognition, not only in sports but also in fostering and building healthy relationships.
